01Brief

The problem

OneThread sends young people of Irish heritage to Ireland, for almost nothing. But the trip is the vehicle, not the point. The point is connection: bringing together people who share something as fundamental as where their family comes from, and who have never stood in the place itself. Birthright Israel is the obvious reference point, and the founders were open about it.

So the brand had to hold several things at once. It had to carry the weight of that connection, of family, heritage and belonging, and look credible to the governments and sponsors who would fund it. It had to feel like something a twenty-year-old would want to be part of. And it couldn’t look like just another travel company.

02Solution

The solution

A mark from sailing

The mark came from sailing, which has nothing to do with Ireland and everything to do with the product.

Every yacht club has a burgee — a small triangular flag that belongs to that club and no other. When you sail into someone else’s club, you trade burgees. It’s an old, slightly formal ritual whose entire purpose is to make strangers who have one thing in common into people who know each other.

That is precisely what a OneThread trip is. So the mark is built from burgee triangles, arranged so they resolve into a circle, representing the continuity of the thing you inherited, and the community that closes around it.

A system, not a logo

OneThread is the parent. Each destination is a sub-brand flying its own burgee, built from the same geometry as the parent mark.

Birthright Ireland is the pilot program, with others to follow, and the system was designed for them from the start. Birthright France and Birthright Italy already have marks, and somewhere to sit from day one. That is the difference between designing a logo and designing a brand: the second one anticipates the company it will have to describe in five years.

The markFive burgees, each pointing at the next, closing into a circle. It comes apart so you can see the flags.
